The Department of Korean Ethics Education,
which aims to cultivate teachers of Ethics in secondary schools, was established in 1979 as the first Moral and Ethics Education Department in Korea. We study the basics of ethics and ethical ideas such as Eastern and Western ethics, Democratic ethics, and the ethics regarding Korea’s reunification. Furthermore, we seek to examine in depth the ethical issues in modern societies. Especially, we foster the required qualifications for secondary school ethics teachers through intensified subject matter education such as Educational Theories in Teaching Moral & Ethics and Teaching Materials & Methods : Moral & Ethics. We, the department of Korean Ethics Education, are conducting the practical moral•ethics education in close cooperation with secondary schools as this department is in College of Education. Pass rates for teacher certification examination remain the highest level in Korea, and a number of graduates get hired as teachers. The graduates from this department have been working as competent moral•ethics teachers all over the country including in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do as well as Daegu and Gyeonsangbuk-do. They have advanced to school commissioners. In addition, numerous graduates have entered and studied in master’s and doctor’s courses in graduate school, some of whom have become professors. We are expecting the teacher from this department, who have played the key roles in the field of secondary school moral•ethics education all around the country, to perform more remarkable educational activities.
